How to Prepare Raw Herbal Decoctions

Some herbal prescriptions are provided as raw herbs to be prepared at home.Proper preparation helps ensure the herbs are used effectively and appropriately

Choosing the Right Pot

A non-metallic pot is recommended, such as ceramic or enamel.

Avoid aluminium or iron cookware, as these materials may interfere with the herbs during cooking.

Water & Soaking

Use clean, cold water rather than hot water.

Before cooking, soak the herbs in water for approximately 60 minutes. This allows the herbs to hydrate evenly and supports proper extraction.

Cooking Method

A single prescription is usually prepared in two separate boils.

First boil

  • Add sufficient water to fully cover the herbs (approximately 1–2 cm above the surface).
  • Bring to a boil, then simmer according to the prescription provided.
  • Cooking time may vary depending on the nature of the herbs.

Second boil

  • Add fresh water and repeat the process.
  • The liquid from both boils is combined before use.

Taking the decoction

The combined herbal liquid is divided into the instructed doses and taken as advised.

Any unused portion should be stored in the refrigerator and gently reheated before use.
